How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.

Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.

Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

Hardware head-scratcher: HBA and PCI-E Expander recognition in Linux Lite
Posted by: lacowi4161 - 01-27-2026, 08:32 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

Hi everyone,
I’ve been using Linux Lite for about two years now on a variety of older machines. I absolutely love how it breathes life into hardware that Windows has long since abandoned. Recently, I decided to take an old mid-tower desktop that was sitting in my closet and turn it into a dedicated, low-power storage node for my home network. Since Linux Lite is so lightweight, it seemed like the perfect OS to keep resources focused on data throughput rather than desktop fluff.
However, I’ve run into a bit of a technical "rabbit hole" that I’m hoping someone here might have navigated before. To get the storage capacity I need, I’ve installed a dedicated HBA (Host Bus Adapter) card along with a PCI-E expander card. My goal was to bypass the limited onboard SATA ports and run a larger array of mechanical drives for a redundant backup system.
The specific point that's tripping me up is how the current kernel in Linux Lite 6.x is negotiating the handshake with the PCI-E expander. When I boot up, the HBA itself is recognized immediately in the terminal via lspci, but the drives connected through the expander card are acting very sporadically. Sometimes they show up in GParted, and other times they just don’t initialize at all during the mount process. I've read in some older documentation that certain power-management features in the kernel can sometimes conflict with "enterprise-grade" controllers when they're used in consumer-grade motherboards.
I’ve always been a bit of a "janky tech" enthusiast—there’s a certain satisfaction in making high-end server gear work in a repurposed office PC—but this one has me stumped. I’ve already tried disabling the "Link Power Management" in the BIOS, thinking it was a power-state issue, but the inconsistency remains. It’s frustrating because when it does work, the speeds are fantastic, but I can't rely on a storage box that might lose half its drives after a simple reboot.
I’m curious if anyone else in the community has experimented with HBA controllers or PCI-E expansion hardware on Lite. Do you think I should be looking into a specific kernel header or perhaps a manual tweak to the GRUB parameters to ensure these cards initialize properly every time?
Has anyone noticed if newer versions of Linux Lite have changed the way they handle high-latency PCI-E handshakes compared to the older 5.x releases?

Annoying behaviour on wake from sleep LL 4.8
Posted by: ShaunR - 01-26-2026, 02:43 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

Hello All,

I have installed Linux Lite 4.8 on an HP 350 G2.  Everything seems to work fine except for waking from the suspended state.
I have set the computer to blank the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity and suspend after 30 minutes on both power and battery.
The screen goes blank as it should after 5 minutes, then after 30 minutes it suspends and the power light starts flashing.
If I now try to wake it up by touching the mouse pad, what happens is that the power light stops flashing, but the screen stays dark.  I have to touch the mouse pad again to make the screen turn on.

So I have to touch the mouse twice to wake it up every time.

This may seem like a small thing, but it is still annoying.  I would like the computer to wake from sleep and turn the screen back on with a single touch of the mouse.

Can anyone please suggest a fix, or at least a way of finding out why the screen doesn't turn on when the mouse is first touched?

I have already tried to fix it by putting:
ExecStart=/usr/bin/bash -c "xrandr -d :0 --output eDP-1 --auto"
in a systemd service file "After=suspend.target", which seemed like a good idea, but soon discovered that the command was not being executed on wake after suspend.

UPDATE
I have now discovered that if I put startx in the systemd service file, the screen turns on after suspend unconditionally.  So it's fixed!  The only problem is that startx fails with a lot of error messages in syslog, so this isn't a very satisfactory solution.

(The command wasn't being executed before because the bash path was wrong, it should be /bin/bash.)

Cant find up-to-date drivers for Radeon R3 graphics chip
Posted by: justsumrandomcreture - 01-13-2026, 02:18 AM - Forum: Video Cards - No Replies

good day.

I recently switched to duel booting Linux Lite on my gaming laptop for the reason that windows 10 caused it to lag every four seconds.

now for the most part, the switch went great, aside from one issue.

my laptop has the radeon R3 integrated graphics chip (also known as Mullins r3 graphics and AMD stoney), its not an great chip, but its my only real option.

the linux Mesa graphics drivers do not seem to have any sort of up-to-date drivers in them for my card.

16-bit style games and games with simple png graphics work well with Lite, but so far three of my games (Dead By Daylight, Bendy Lone Wolf, Team Fortress 2), have such bad rendering and are so slow on Lite that their unplayable, well they didnt have this problem on Window 10.

I suspect that this is because of the Mesa drivers not having programming for them.

for context, I originally used the latest offical drivers for my card, before switching to the windows Bootcamp community drivers when Dead By Daylight wouldnt work with the AMD drivers.

That is all that I can think to explain, thank you for reading.

Troubles installing 7.6 on Intel Atom
Posted by: Mcewena - 01-09-2026, 12:11 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

So to prefix this, I’m not a Linux guy.

I’m trying to repurpose an old Intel Atom based laptop, it needs to run a browser and low volume stream to Twitch.   I first chose Bionic Puppy32 19.03 from an usb stick and it works OK but the browser is funky and I can’t get flatpak to install so I moved on to Linux Lite 7.6.

Booting from an LL USB stick I get one of 2 outcomes (and I can’t figure out the pattern):

90% of the time booting live, direct install or in compatibility mode I get an feather desktop with no control over my mouse (either from the onboard touch pad or a Logitech usb cordless).  The mouse pointer is in the centre of the screen so I assume that’s indicating the system thinks I have a pointer?   Compatibility mode shows the Logitech driver loading fine but an error with the Bluetooth drivers.

10% (or less) the install ends at a screen asks me for a username/pwd, tried root/admin and other randomness, no joy.  But the mouse works!?!  (Screen shot below)

I’ve tried Blue Star and I get as far as the splash screen and then hangs, I’m assuming I’m out of resources.   Fossapup64 9.6 hangs at nearly the 1st hurdle (initrd.gz).

Fool’s errand?

Tia
