If I were going to play with 4.12, I'd do it in Xubuntu itself - in a VM, of course. I'd also keep a close watch their support forums for new issues that are discovered by the Xubuntu community...

		Just another XFCE 4.12 for you VM users to play with. 
My druthers is instead of VM. I like to run a persistent flash drive. Like I did with Linux-Lite first before I installed it 2 different laptop hard drives.
It cuts out hardware compatibility time/issues that I might run into later after a install.
Something a VM cannot do. 
But I am weird like that.
Running VM has always been like running Gnu/Linux with a condom for me.

I went ahead with a MX-14.4 install with XFCE 4.12 on my IBM M57 Tower. 
I made it fugly on purpose though. Because, 
I am weird like that.
